Dhaka, February 15, 2025 – Dhaka’s Metro Rail has achieved a new milestone by carrying a record-breaking 4 lakh passengers in a single day, marking a significant achievement in the city's public transportation system. The surge in ridership underscores the growing popularity and reliance on the Metro Rail for daily commuting in the capital.
According to the Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL), this record was set on February 14, when an unprecedented number of passengers utilized the metro service. Officials attributed the surge to an increase in daily commuters, special events in the city, and the efficiency of the metro system.
“This is a proud moment for us. The Metro Rail is proving to be an essential mode of transport, easing congestion and offering a faster commute for Dhaka’s residents,” said MAN Siddique, Managing Director of DMTCL. He further emphasized that authorities are committed to maintaining service efficiency and passenger convenience amid the rising demand.
The metro system, which initially started operations in December 2022, has rapidly gained traction among commuters due to its punctuality, safety, and comfort. The number of passengers has steadily increased, particularly during peak hours, as more residents opt for the metro over traditional road transport, which often suffers from severe traffic congestion.Passengers also expressed satisfaction with the metro service, citing its reliability and ability to cut travel time significantly. “It takes me less than half the time to reach my destination compared to buses. The experience is smooth and hassle-free,” said one commuter at the Uttara North station.
To accommodate the rising demand, DMTCL has been working on expanding services, adding more trains, and extending the metro network. Currently, operations run between Uttara and Motijheel, but further expansions are in progress, aiming to cover a larger portion of the city in the coming years.
With the increasing adoption of metro services, transport experts believe thatDhaka’s Metro Rail is playing a crucial role in transforming urban mobility, reducing pollution, and easing traffic congestion in one of the world’s most densely populated cities.
Authorities have encouraged commuters to continue using the metro for a more sustainable and efficient daily travel experience. With such milestones being achieved, Dhaka’s Metro Rail is well on its way to becoming the backbone of the city’s public transport system.
